Maybe you have realized that you can no longer control your drinking or drug use. drug addiction affects many. Maybe it is a spouse who needs a drink to “relax”, a child whose anger is masking a drug problem, or a friend who makes too many excuses for her partner's drinking. No one chooses to be an addict or an alcoholic. It's a gradual illness that is usually spotted only in hindsight. Self honesty, on the other hand, admitting the problem is out of control and seeking help, is the way out of addiction. Addiction is cunning, baffling, and powerful. Drugs and alcohol make people feel better, and when people begin to rely on 'that feeling', their reliance and development of their own character and moral principals suffer. The longer the addiction, the stronger the illness and stronger the compulsion to use drugs again. Drugs become the solution to all personality ailments and shortcomings: say, feelings of loss, anger, shame, guilt, inadequacy, insecurity, fear, and the list goes on and on.
Drug treatment begins when we separate the addict or alcoholic from the drug. He resides in the controlled environment of a treatment center that provides a supportive message of hope. Self-improvement and resolution of inner conflict dissipates destructive thinking and negative attitudes. Drugs or alcohol are only a symptom of addiction. Underlying that is the root of the problem. Such as, blaming others, excuses, rationalizing mistakes, and minimizing shortcomings, to name a few. The opposite of this negative mentality is taking full responsibility
for your life. Honestly admitting that difficulties come from within,
is a healthy awareness. The treatment process should be focused on the
development of a better self. |
